What:  The fifth annual Lake Martin (Tallapoosa River) cleanup will be Saturday, June 7 in Tallapoosa County. Volunteers with or without boats can meet at D.A.R.E. Park, Real Island, Alexander City, Kowaliga  or Union boat ramps at 8 a.m. to remove trash, tires and discarded items from the lake.  The cleanup will end at noon.
 

This Renew Our Rivers cleanup is coordinated by the Middle Tallapoosa River Basin Clean Water Partnership, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and Alabama Power employees.  In 2007, more than 150 volunteers removed 6.17 tons of trash and debris from Lake Martin.
 

Overview:  Renew Our Rivers, the Southeast’s largest river cleanup campaign, has collected nearly 9 million pounds of trash and debris from Alabama and Southeast rivers since its 2000 inception.  There are 27 cleanups planned through Oct. 25 on the Cahaba, Coosa, Tallapoosa, Black Warrior and Mobile rivers.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                             

Directions: Alexander City boat ramp: Take Coley Creek Road off Highway 280 in Alexander City. D.A.R.E Park boat ramp:  From Dadeville travel west for 6 miles on Young’s  Ferry Road.                                                                                                       
Real Island boat ramp:  Take Highway 9 in Equality to County Road 2 to Real Island Road.           Union boat ramp:  Take Highway 50 on Center Port Road.
Kowaliga boat ramp:   From Alexander City, travel south on Highway 63 for 14 miles. The boat ramp is on the right just before crossing Kowaliga Creek.
