BIRMINGHAM - July 16, 2008 - The Alabama Power Foundation, in partnership with the Alabama Urban Forestry Association (AUFA), is accepting applications for the 2008 Community Forestry Program.

The Community Forestry Program is open to local governments, nonprofit groups, and public and private schools, colleges and universities. Grants of up to $2,000 are awarded. This year, a new award will also be given. Grants up to $4,000 each will be awarded to six communities to beautify their gateways or welcome-sign areas.

Applications must be postmarked by Sept. 1, 2008. Winners will be notified no later than Nov. 6, 2008.

Over the past nine years, more than $536,000 has been distributed in tree grants to more than 570 cities, counties, schools and community groups. Grants have been used to buy thousands of trees for planting in community parks, along roadways and on school grounds, among other sites.

“We’re delighted the program this year will include the enhancement of gateways in six communities,” said Bill Johnson, president of the Alabama Power Foundation. “The Community Forestry Program has been directly responsible for making our state look more attractive and enjoyable for residents and visitors alike.”
