Volunteers clean Village Creek Sept.10-13 as part of Renew Our Rivers campaign

Sept. 2, 2008 What: Volunteers are needed for the fourth annual Village Creek cleanup Wednesday, Sept. 10 through Saturday, Sept. 13 in Birmingham. The cleanup will end Saturday at noon with a picnic lunch. This Renew Our Rivers cleanup is coordinated by members of the Village Creek Society, Village Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant, Birmingham Fire and Rescue Department and Alabama Power. In 2007, almost 300 volunteers removed nearly 9 tons of trash and debris from Village Creek. Overview: Volunteers for Renew Our Rivers, the Southeast’s largest river cleanup campaign, have collected more than 9 million pounds of trash and debris from Alabama and Southeast rivers since the 2000 inception. This year, 28 cleanups are planned through October on the Cahaba, Coosa, Tallapoosa, Black Warrior and Mobile rivers. Directions: Take Interstate 20/59 West to Exit 121 (Bush Blvd./Ensley). Turn right off the interstate to Avenue V, which becomes Avenue W. Travel approximately 1/2 mile north to the creek.
