BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Oct. 27, 2007 - The Alabama Power Service Organization (APSO) and community partners have teamed up to improve the energy efficiency of a needy family’s home in the Birmingham area. Work on the home will be completed by APSO volunteers on National Weatherization Day, Oct. 30.

The Alabama Weatherization Association (AWA), Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs (ADECA) and the Jefferson County Committee for Economic Opportunity (JCCEO) selected the family and surveyed the family’s home in Leeds to determine the appropriate energy-efficiency improvements.  On Thursday, Oct. 30, volunteers from APSO and the community agencies will finish weatherizing the home and do other, minor fix-ups.   

“We want to help customers understand how making simple, energy-efficiency improvements can help them save money,” said Carla Roberson, Alabama Power’s Education and Volunteer Services manager, “APSO volunteers are happy to partner with ADECA and JCCEO on this community project.”

The home of Brenda Teems will receive a number of upgrades, including more insulation in the attic; repairs to ducts and siding; and fresh caulking around windows. The home’s hot water heater will be wrapped with insulation, and conventional light bulbs are being replaced with compact fluorescents.

Steve Till, ADECA weatherization manager, said, “Our Weatherization Assistance Program educates homeowners on steps they can take to reduce their energy consumption.  We offer the homeowner assistance where it will make the most impact.”

Kris Rowe of AWA applauded Alabama Power and APSO volunteers for their role in the partnership. He also praised AWA members John Woods, Tracy Rhodes and Donny Barber for their vital support to the Weatherization Day project. “What better way to commemorate Weatherization Day than by serving and helping someone in need, because we all recognize the need is greater than ever,” Rowe said.

Roberson said APSO plans to expand the weatherization initiative next year by making energy efficiency upgrades at the homes of deserving families across the state.
