BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Oct. 27, 2008 - Renew Our Rivers, one of the Southeast's largest organized river-system cleanups, has concluded another successful season. The final Alabama cleanup was held Saturday, Oct. 25 at Lake Mitchell in Clanton.

When the cleanups gear up next spring, the program will enter its 10th year.  A total of nearly 10 million pounds of trash has been collected from Southeastern waterways in Georgia, Florida, Alabama and Mississippi. This year, more than 826,000 pounds of litter and debris have been pulled from Alabama waterways alone.

Volunteer support is the key element of Renew Our Rivers. More than 5,600 people, including customers and employees, have supported one of the 28 cleanups in Alabama this year. Renew Our Rivers partners with a number of  community groups including school systems, environmental groups and homeowner/boat owner associations. 

“This is obviously something the volunteers believe in, and we are proud to be a support for their efforts,” said Environmental Affairs Vice President Willard Bowers. “Renew Our Rivers has grown because of the participation of volunteers. Others see their passion, and want to become a part of it.”
