Through Junior Achievement (JA), nearly 700 students at E.L. Connally Elementary School received lessons this week in free enterprise, business and economics from more than 60 Georgia Power volunteers.

Since Nov. 2, kindergarten through 5th-grade students at Connally have been engaged in a weeklong experience of JA programs with the help of Georgia Power volunteers. Sixty-three Georgia Power volunteers spent one hour each day with students in 42 classes tutoring on topics such as Ourselves, Our Families, Our Community, Our City, Our Region and Our Nation.

These grade-appropriate JA programs teach students the value of free enterprise, business and economics to improve the quality of their lives. The experience will culminate in a wrap-up assembly at Connally Nov. 9 at 9 a.m. with a performance by the school’s choir, student presentations and remarks by Dr. Mable B. Johnson, principal. The school is located at 1654 S. Alvarado Terrace S.W.

“Georgia Power is a Citizen Wherever We Serve. Education is very important to us and being able to share information about business and economics with the students of E.L. Connally Elementary School has been an outstanding experience for us,” said Kevin Fletcher, vice president of Retail Sales and Junior Achievement of Georgia board member. Fletcher, one of the Georgia Power volunteers, taught economics to a 5th-grade class at Connally during the week.

Junior Achievement is the world`s largest and fastest-growing organization dedicated to educating young people about business, economics and free enterprise. Through age-appropriate curricula, Junior Achievement programs begin at the elementary school level, teaching children how they can impact the world around them as individuals, workers and consumers. Junior Achievement programs continue through the middle and high school grades, preparing students for additional key economic and workforce issues they will face in the future. This year, Junior Achievement of Georgia will serve more than 75,000 students in metro Atlanta, Augusta, Gainesville, and Savannah, Georgia.
