A severe thunderstorm moving across Savannah this afternoon has resulted in outages affecting Wilmington, Whitemarsh, Talahi and Tybee Islands as well as in other parts of town.
Initial reports indicate that the main outage is primarily the result of damage to a 115,000 volt transmission line. Tree damage is indicated in the vicinity of Bryan Woods Road. Other scattered outages from smaller scale damage are also expected in and around the area.
The outage is likely to last well into the evening, however, when repairs are made to the transmission line a large number of customers will have power restored.
Because of the expected duration of the outage, the area covered and the time of day, Savannah Electric has notified public safety authorities for traffic purposes. Customers are advised to use care when traveling in the area as traffic signals and roadway lighting will not be available for some time.
