Motor oil, paint, batteries -- these are just some of the common substances that consumers use everyday. These are also substances that can cause real harm to our waterways and vital groundwater sources if carelessly thrown away. Giving the community an easy way to safely dispose of these items was the objective when Savannah Electric and the Local Emergency Planning Committee (LEPC) began the Recycle Rama in 1998.

This Saturday, April 16, will mark the seventh Savannah Electric/LEPC Recycle Rama event, which has helped keep thousands of gallons of harmful materials out of our water. Totals are:

Paint: 4,670 gallons

Oil: 2,045 gallons

Car Batteries: 455

Over the years, there have also been hundreds of pounds each of aluminum, other batteries, glass, paper, cardboard and more turned in for recycling through the Recycle Rama. In some cases items turned in even help fund further environmental efforts.

The event is held in conjunction with local Earth Day events at Forsyth Park in Savannah. Savannah Electric will also have a booth at the City of Savannah/Jiffy Lube Earth Day Festival adjacent to the Recycle-Rama. Each year hundreds of participants receive advice and information about the company`s environmental and safety efforts, line clearance, forestry, energy efficiency and more.
