While power was restored to most Savannah Electric customers during the day Thursday (Oct. 6), the last few repairs were completed early Friday, a day ahead of original estimates.
Savannah Electric crews worked through the night Thursday to complete the work. This became possible after assistance from sister company Georgia Power and outside contractors brought outage totals down from several thousand to several hundred Thursday evening.
The outages began as heavy rains and storm winds hit the area, gusting to near 50 mph. Savannah Electrics main lines and transmission system received only minor damage, but a particular challenge was the large number of isolated outages due to falling limbs and trees in backyards.
Savannah Electric will continue to monitor the weather situation as more storms are expected Friday, which could bring new damage.
Most Georgia Power storm teams were released Friday morning, though a few were held over to assist with clean-up work and to provide coverage for the Savannah crews on rest period after the all-night work.
Any customers still experiencing a power outage should call Savannah Electrics Hotline at 1-800-390-2834.
