Savannah Electric will again participate -- in partnership with Keep Savannah Beautiful and others -- in the annual Chipper Christmas Tree Recycling Program this Saturday, January 8, 2000.

The statewide event encourages the public to bring their old Christmas trees to specified locations where they will be ground into mulch. The free service is provided from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. at six locations in the Savannah area. Sites are: Bacon Park Transfer Station, the Dean Forest Landfill, the Wilmington Island Landfill, The Home Depot on Abercorn Street, Gaster Lumber on Highway 21, and -- new this year -- Kroger at Gwinnett and Habersham Streets. Savannah Electric sponsors three of the sites.

The “Chipper” program’s benefits include conserving landfill space, providing free mulch to the public and promoting new tree plantings through the distribution of free seedlings (while supplies last).

Since 1991, more than 800,000 seedlings have been given to recyclers across Georgia. Many are now mature trees that enhance the environment.

Savannah Electric’s Tree Contracting Services, Asplundh and Trees, Inc. also participate, donating the use of equipment at the three Savannah Electric locations.

Savannah Electric is proud of its association with this event and has participated every year since it became a statewide program in 1990.
