The Mississippi Power Education Foundation recently awarded more than $17,500 in grants for varied projects at eight schools. Grant recipients:

Beauvoir Elementary in Biloxi, $1,990 for "Cruising Through the Curriculum," a program to help kindergarten students link school subjects with real life situations.

Michel Middle School in Biloxi, $1,605 to help biology students use the Internet for research.

Gorenflo Elementary in Biloxi, $1,953 to implement a before-school reading program and supply books and materials.

Ocean Springs High School, $1,985 to help launch "Rewind That Again," a program that will build a video library of mathematics instruction for students in grades nine through 11.

Lucedale Intermediate School, $2,000 to buy software to enhance language arts instruction in third through fifth grades.

Central Elementary in Lucedale, $1,000 to help integrate technology into fourth- and fifth-grade classrooms. The grant will buy equipment to help students conduct research and publish their findings through a multi-media presentation.

Alternative School in Leakesville, $5,000 to help enhance the curriculum of the school with a project enabling students to use existing and emerging technologies.

McLain Attendance Center, $2,000 to help the school incorporate new technology into the classrooms for sixth- through eighth-graders.
