For the fourth consecutive year, Mississippi Power’s sponsorship and support of Harrison County’s Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day has resulted in a Keep Mississippi Beautiful Award. Plant Watson has hosted the event since its inception ten years ago.

“The Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day is a wonderful example of how numerous groups and individuals can work together to do something meaningful for our community,” said Kurt Brautigam, Mississippi Power spokesman. “Keeping toxic materials out of the environment is essential. We’re indebted to Harrison County and our other partners for all their support and to all the volunteers who show up each year to make the day a success.”

In 2004, more than 840 citizens dropped off thousands of pounds of hazardous waste for proper disposal. Items collected included: 3,225 gallons of hazardous chemicals; 1,850 gallons of motor oil; 2,700 tires; 529 car batteries; and 15,495 pounds of white goods. Electronic goods were also collected for the first time last year and more than six tons of old computers, cell phones, televisions, VCRs and other products with hazardous compounds in them were dropped off.

Approximately 120 volunteers – most of whom were Mississippi Power employees and local students – worked at the event.

“This project promotes teamwork, education, safety and environmental awareness,” said Brautigam. “It is also a wonderful way to demonstrate the commitment of our employees to protecting our communities and the environment.”

The event has been recognized with numerous other awards, including the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s prestigious Gulf Guardian Award.
