Alabama Power Foundation contributes $12,500 to Greene County Math and Science Day Camp

The Alabama Power Foundation is helping the Greene County Math and Science Day Camp celebrate its 10th anniversary with a $12,500 donation.

Alabama Power was a founding member of the math and science camp, which has served 500 students from first to sixth grade during the last decade. This year’s program, called Math and Science Connection 2006, is expected to draw 50 to 60 children from throughout Greene County. The camp takes place June 19-23 at Carver Middle School.

“We could not have had the positive impact on these local children without the outstanding support of the Alabama Power Foundation and the company’s local manager, Danny Cooper,” said Phillis Belcher, executive director of the Greene County Industrial Development Board. Belcher serves as a consultant to the camp and is also a founding member.

Campers participate in hands-on activities and projects related to math and science, with a heavy emphasis on reading. Individualized instruction is offered in math, science reading and writing. Each class has a science and math teacher, plus an aide. Many parents volunteer their help.

“This is exactly the kind of event the Alabama Power Foundation was created to support,” said Cooper, manager of the company’s Eutaw Office. “Educating future generations is the name of the game.”

Feedback from parents of participating children has convinced Belcher and Cooper the program is well worth the effort.

Belcher said, “I will never forget when the mother of four boys asked me, ‘What are you doing to my sons? My boys have never read like this before now.’ “
