Coast schools awarded grants from Mississippi Power Education on the Coast got a boost recently from the Mississippi Power Foundation. Four area schools received grants in support of exceptional educational projects for students. Gulfport High School received a grant to send representatives to the “Coalition of Essential Schools” forum in San Francisco, California. The conference focuses on leadership and curriculum issues. St. John Elementary School in Gulfport was awarded a grant for a program to provide software for individual classroom instruction. Quarles Elementary School in Long Beach received a grant to fund a project that provides students with take-home kits to reinforce skills learned at school. Taconi Elementary in Ocean Springs received a grant for an innovative geography project. “The Mississippi Power Foundation has had a long tradition of funding worthy projects for Mississippi’s children,” said Huntley Biggs, executive director, Mississippi Power Foundation. “We hope this year’s exceptional projects will inspire other schools to play a more active role in the lives of our youth.” The Mississippi Power Foundation was set up in 1984 by Mississippi Power Company to support excellence in education. In the past 13 years, the Foundation has awarded more than $2 million in grants for education projects in Mississippi.
