Four area schools receive grants from Mississippi Power Foundation Four Pine Belt area schools were recently awarded grants totaling almost $8,000 from the Mississippi Power Foundation. Lumberton Elementary School received a grant for a program to provide kindergartners with a solid literacy foundation. Second and third graders at Bassfield Elementary will benefit from a grant received for a program to develop hands-on science experiments. Runnelstown Elementary received a grant for a program entitled “Success with Cooking.” This project combines the fun of preparing foods with learning basic math, science and language arts skills. McLain Attendance Center received a grant for a mobile science laboratory. “The Mississippi Power Foundation has had a long tradition of funding worthy projects for Mississippi’s children,” said Huntley Biggs, executive director, Mississippi Power Foundation. “We hope the creativity of this year’s projects inspires other schools to play a more active role in the lives of our youth.” The Mississippi Power Foundation was set up in 1984 by Mississippi Power Company to support excellence in education. In the past 13 years, the Foundation has awarded more than $2 million in grants for education projects in Mississippi.
