Southern Company names Ed Day senior vice president

Southern Company announced today that Ed Day has been named senior vice president of engineering and construction services for Southern Company Generation and Energy Marketing, a business unit of Southern Company that works to manage and generate electricity for the company’s retail customers and markets energy in the competitive wholesale supply business. Day will have management responsibility for engineering, procurement and construction services to the existing generating plant fleet as well as for new and planned generation.

“With his leadership abilities, knowledge and experience, Ed is well suited for this key position,” said Paul Bowers, president of Southern Company Generation and Energy Marketing and president and CEO of Southern Power, a Southern Company subsidiary that builds, owns and manages the company’s competitive generation assets. “We generate electricity for our retail and wholesale customers and market electricity in the competitive wholesale supply business. In his new role, Ed is responsible for the aspects of our business that allow us to continue generating reliable energy at competitive prices, giving us a solid reputation with our customers.”

Day was previously vice president of business development for Southern Company Generation and Energy Marketing, a position he held since 2001. He began his career with Southern Company in 1983 as an engineer in the Hatch nuclear support project. He progressed through positions of increasing responsibility, including project manager roles in nuclear operations, before he was named engineering group supervisor in 1990. He was named assistant to the executive vice president of engineering in 1992. In 1996, Day was named wholesale business development manager for Southern Wholesale Energy and he was promoted to director of business development for Southern Company Generation and Energy Marketing in 1998.

Day received a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Alabama in 1982 and an M.B.A. from Samford University in 1991.
