Gulf Power employees and conservation projects featured on Ultimate Outdoors

PENSACOLA, Florida – Gulf Power stewardship projects and employees are being featured on Pursuit Channel during the “Wayne Pearson’s Ultimate Outdoors” now through the end of the year.

On Saturday, Oct. 10, Scott Jordon, Land Management specialist, will talk about longleaf pine plantings that have been done on Gulf Power property since the company joined the Gulf Coast Plain Ecosystem Partnership in 2014.

GCPEP is a voluntary landowner partnership that consists of publicly and privately owned forests across Northwest Florida and South Alabama. Collectively, the partnerships manage 1.05 million acres. Gulf Power enrolled 4,828 acres into the partnership, including the land in North Escambia featured on Ultimate Outdoors.

“Vernon Compton, from GCPEP, and I are speaking about the work in the clip,” Jordan said. “And there’s B-roll with several company employees, including Buck Lowery (Line Clearing specialist-Crestview) doing longleaf pine plantings in the background.”

The feature is one of a series of 13 video vignettes – highlighting projects supported or led by Southern Company that deal with natural resource management, wildlife conservation and environmental stewardship within the company’s service area -- getting valuable exposure on cable and satellite TV.

Gulf Power’s Natalie Smith, Corporate Communications specialist, and Southern Company’s Jessica Freeland, who until recently led Gulf Power’s Stewardship program, will be featured in a vignette “Coastal Dune Lakes,” slated to air several times the week of Oct. 13. And Freeland will be interviewed in “Living Shorelines” the week of Oct. 20. Smith will be interviewed in “Jones Creek Wetland Preserve” the week of Dec. 8.

Conservationists who frequent our local beaches to study shorebirds will be highlighted in “Shorebird Conservation” the week of Nov. 24.

Gulf Power’s Brian Yablonski, External Affairs director, was interviewed in “Youth Conservation Centers” that aired on Sept. 29 – Oct. 1.

His and all of the Southern Company vignettes will be posted online at a later date.

Leslie Cox, Southern Company Environmental Stewardship manager, said Southern Company has been supporting the Wayne Pearson show with the vignettes since the mid-2000s.

“We try to feature work we’re doing in partnership with others and what we’re doing on our own lands involving the environment, wildlife and general conservation,” she said. “It’s a great way to showcase not only the efforts we support in our community but also the volunteerism and actions of our own employees who are making the places we serve better through their stewardship.”
