MIX, an Alabama Power initiative, engages millennials
Encourages young adults to invest in their communities

This week Alabama Power is launching MIX, an engagement initiative to inspire future leaders to invest their time and talents in their communities.

Through a series of events kicking off today in Birmingham, MIX encourages millennials – ages 21 to 35 – to come together, share ideas and build relationships in a supportive and social setting. Events range from nights-out at local breweries raising money for nonprofits, to get-togethers over coffee to talk about innovative ideas that impact our communities.

“MIX is an opportunity for Alabama Power to connect with the brightest, most capable, up-and-coming leaders, who are just as motivated as we are to implement innovative ideas and create opportunities to shape the future of Alabama,” said Nick Sellers, vice president of Regulatory and Corporate Affairs at Alabama Power.

“This group is the future voice of leadership in Alabama, so we want to engage them in ways that positively impact issues, organizations and efforts that they care about, as we work together to powerfully shape tomorrow,” Sellers said.

Today’s kickoff takes place from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Trim Tab Brewing Company in Birmingham’s Lakeview neighborhood. The event benefits Red Mountain Park, with $10 donated from each attendee to support the park’s new junior board. This first MIX Night Out features a demonstration of Birmingham’s new Zyp public bikeshare system, a live DJ and opportunities to network.

MIX events will also highlight several initiatives of Alabama Power, encouraging millennials to join efforts to advance innovation, support environmental stewardship and work together to help revitalize communities. Planned civic activities through MIX will offer participants the opportunity to get active and support parks and nonprofits.

Nonprofit partners of MIX include Red Mountain Park, the Freshwater Land Trust, Conservation Alabama, Railroad Park and the Village Creek Society. Following the kickoff, a MIX Impact service opportunity will take place Saturday, Oct. 17, from 9 a.m. until noon at Red Mountain Park, in conjunction with Rotaract and the Birmingham Business Alliance’s OnBoard Birmingham. Volunteers will work to clear a trail at the park.
