Volunteers set to clean Cahaba River April 9

What: The ninth annual Renew Our Rivers Cahaba River cleanup is Saturday, April 9. Volunteers should report at 8 a.m. to River Trace Road near West Blocton. Volunteers must complete a U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service form which they can fill out onsite or receive by contacting cahabafriends@gmail.com. Minors must have a chaperone to participate. Volunteers should wear long pants and closed-toe shoes. Lunch will be provided for volunteers beginning at 10:45 a.m.

This Renew Our Rivers cleanup is coordinated by the Friends of the Cahaba River National Wildlife Refuge, Southern Company and Alabama Power.

Overview: Volunteers for Renew Our Rivers, one of the Southeast’s largest river cleanup campaigns, have collected more than 14 million pounds of trash and debris since the program’s inception in 2000. This year, 32 cleanups are planned through November on the Alabama, Black Warrior, Cahaba, Chattahoochee, Coosa, Mobile and Tallapoosa rivers.

Directions: From I-20, take Exit 97 toward West Blocton. Turn left onto Highway 11. Travel several miles and take a left onto Highway 5. Follow for 9 miles and take a left onto County Road 24. Travel for 5 miles and take a right onto River Trace Road.
