Gulf Power names Mike Markey new Director of Environmental Affairs

PENSACOLA, Fla. – Gulf Power recently announced the promotion of Mike Markey to Director of Environmental Affairs, effective April 29.

He will replace Jim Vick, who is retiring after 38 years of service with Gulf Power.

Markey, who is currently the Manager of Land & Water programs, has more than 33 years working in the environmental field. He has held positions in the oil and gas industry, Florida Department of Environmental Regulation, consulting and Gulf Power. He has served in various capacities with Gulf Power for the last 22 years in air, land and water compliance, and served in a management capacity for the last 11 years.

He received a Bachelor of Geology from Oklahoma State University in 1983 and his Masters in Civil/Environmental Engineering from Florida State University in 2000.

Well respected inside and outside of Gulf Power, Markey was named 2015 Environmental Professional of the Year by the Association of Environmental Professionals Northwest Florida Chapter.

He and his team’s involvement in the community and the water reuse program they spearheaded at Plant Crist and one in the works for Plant Smith, in partnership with Bay County and Panama City, are key reasons Markey was recognized by his state peers.

Markey holds various board and leadership positions in the state and the local community, including chairman of the Florida Section of the Air & Waste Management Association, president of the Florida Association of Environmental Professionals and a member of the Florida Electric Coordinating Group in Florida.
