Volunteers set to clean Yates and Thurlow lakes April 22

What: The 12th annual Renew Our Rivers Yates and Thurlow lakes cleanup is Friday, April 22. Volunteers should report at 8 a.m. at Yates Dam warehouse. Volunteers should wear long pants, boots and a long-sleeved shirt. Minors must have a chaperone to participate. Lunch will be provided for the volunteers. The cleanup will finish at 11:30 a.m.

This Renew Our Rivers cleanup is coordinated by Alabama Power.

Overview: Volunteers for Renew Our Rivers, one of the Southeast’s largest river cleanup campaigns, have collected more than 14 million pounds of trash and debris since the program’s inception in 2000. This year, 32 cleanups are planned through November on the Alabama, Black Warrior, Cahaba, Chattahoochee, Coosa, Mobile and Tallapoosa rivers.

Directions: From Wetumpka on Highway 14, take a left at CVS and left at the police station. Go approximately 4 miles and you will see a sign for Yates Dam. The address is 554 Yates Dam Road, Tallassee, Ala., 36078.
