Volunteers set to clean Smith Lake April 27-28

What: The annual Renew Our Rivers Smith Lake cleanup begins Wednesday, April 27 and finishes Thursday, April 28. Volunteers should report at 9 a.m. each day at Clear Creek Recreation Area. Volunteers should wear comfortable clothes and closed-toe shoes. Minors must have a chaperone to participate. Lunch will be provided for volunteers. The cleanup will end around 2 p.m. each day.

This Renew Our Rivers cleanup is coordinated by Alabama Power, Bankhead National Forest and Winston County Smith Lake Advocacy Inc.

Overview: Volunteers for Renew Our Rivers, one of the Southeast’s largest river cleanup campaigns, have collected more than 14 million pounds of trash and debris since the program’s inception in 2000. This year, 32 cleanups are planned through November on the Alabama, Black Warrior, Cahaba, Chattahoochee, Coosa, Mobile and Tallapoosa rivers.

Directions: From Double Springs: Travel 12 miles south on Highway 195 to Lamon Chapel Road. Follow to the end of Lamon Chapel Road and turn left on County Road 27. Travel 2 miles to the Clear Creek entrance station. Follow the signs to the boat ramp.

From Jasper: Travel about ½ mile north on Highway 195 to Manchester. Go north on County Road 27 approximately 8.5 miles to the Clear Creek entrance station. Follow the signs to the boat ramp.
