Volunteers set to clean Smith Lake May 16-17

What: The annual Renew Our Rivers Smith Lake cleanup begins Monday, May 16 and ends Tuesday, May 17. Volunteers should report at 8:30 a.m. at Smith Lake Dam parking lot each day. Volunteers should wear comfortable clothes and closed-toe shoes. Minors must have a chaperone to participate. The cleanup will finish at noon each day. Volunteers have the option to continue picking up trash in the afternoon.

This Renew Our Rivers cleanup is coordinated by Alabama Power and Smith Lake Civic Association. 

Overview: Volunteers for Renew Our Rivers, one of the Southeast’s largest river cleanup campaigns, have collected more than 14 million pounds of trash and debris since the program’s inception in 2000. This year, 32 cleanups are planned through November on the Alabama, Black  Warrior, Cahaba, Chattahoochee, Coosa, Mobile and Tallapoosa rivers.

Directions: From Birmingham, travel approximately 30 miles north on Interstate 65. Take exit 291 and turn left onto Highway 91. Continue for 14.6 miles and then turn left on Highway 69 South. Follow Highway 69 for 4.4 miles and then turn right onto Smith Lake Dam Road/County Highway 43. Go 2.7 miles and the parking lot will be on the right side of the road.
