Alabama Power names new Birmingham External Affairs manager


Terry Smiley has been named External Affairs manager for Alabama Power’s Birmingham Division.

Smiley comes to Alabama Power from Alagasco, where he worked for 22 years. He most recently served as Alagasco’s director of Governmental Relations, where he facilitated governmental activities across the state.

Smiley will be responsible for business development, community relations and governmental relations within a six-county area of North Central Alabama. He begins his role at Alabama Power March 13. He succeeds Leroy Nix, who has joined Southern Company’s Washington, D.C., office.

Smiley joined Alagasco in 1994 as a Residential Marketing representative in Birmingham. During his career at Alagasco he held positions of increasing responsibility including Customer Services field supervisor, district manager, Operations superintendent, Construction Services superintendent, Operations manager, Operations Planning manager and Birmingham Division manager.

Smiley holds undergraduate and graduate degrees from Birmingham-Southern College in Business Administration and Public and Private Management respectively. He serves on the boards of directors for the A.G. Gaston Boys & Girls Club, Kid One Transport, Leadership Shelby County and the Downtown Kiwanis Club. He also serves on the United Way of Central Alabama agency impact committee. In 2009 Smiley was recognized as one of the Birmingham Business Journal’s Top 40 under 40. He is a graduate of Leadership Birmingham, Leadership Shelby County and Leadership Walker County.

Smiley was inducted into the Birmingham-Southern College Sports Hall of Fame in 2000 where he was an All-American in basketball for two years and concluded his career as the all-time leading scorer. He and his wife, Melissa, have two children.
