Volunteers set to clean Village Creek Sept. 14-16

What:  The annual Renew Our Rivers Village Creek cleanup is Sept. 14-16, with a community cleanup scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 16. Volunteers for the community cleanup should report at 7:30 a.m. to Avenue M and 11th Street at Moro Park in Ensley. Volunteers must wear long pants and closed-toe shoes. T-shirts will be provided. Minors must have a chaperone to participate. The cleanup will finish at noon and lunch will be provided.

This Renew Our Rivers cleanup is coordinated by the Village Creek Society, the city of Birmingham, Birmingham Fire and Rescue Services, Jefferson County Commission, Vulcan Materials Company, Storm Water Management of Birmingham, Special Occasions and Alabama Power. 

Overview:  Volunteers for Renew Our Rivers, one of the Southeast’s largest river cleanup campaigns, have collected nearly 14 million pounds of trash and debris since the program’s inception in 2000. This year, 32 cleanups are planned through November on the Alabama, Black Warrior, Cahaba, Chattahoochee, Coosa, Mobile and Tallapoosa rivers and other waterways.

Directions:  From downtown Birmingham: Take I-20/59 west to exit 121, Bush Boulevard/Ensley. Travel a half-mile north on Avenue V to Village Creek. Follow signs to registration tent on Avenue M.
