Volunteers set to clean Smith Lake Oct. 5

What:  The Renew Our Rivers Smith Lake cleanup is Thursday, Oct. 5. Volunteers should report to the King Boat Dock at 8:30 a.m. Volunteers should wear comfortable clothes and closed-toe shoes. Minors must have a chaperone to participate. The cleanup will end at 1:30 p.m. and lunch will be provided for volunteers.

This Renew Our Rivers cleanup is coordinated by Alabama Power, Bankhead National Forest and Winston County Smith Lake Advocacy Inc.

Overview:  Volunteers for Renew Our Rivers, one of the Southeast’s largest river cleanup campaigns, have collected more than 14 million pounds of trash and debris since the program’s inception in 2000. This year, 32 cleanups are planned through November on the Alabama, Black Warrior, Cahaba, Chattahoochee, Coosa, Mobile and Tallapoosa rivers.

Directions:  From I-65 North in Birmingham, travel to exit 299. Turn left and go toward Jasper on County Road 69. Drive 7 miles and turn right on County Road 222. Travel for approximately 7 miles and cross the bridge at Trident Marine. Turn left on County Road 933. After you get on County Road 933, the road will change to County Road 222. Follow the road and turn left on County Road 4006. Travel about 1 mile and the King Boat Dock will be on the left.
