Volunteers set to clean Smith Lake in Walker County May 7-8

What: The annual Renew Our Rivers Smith Lake cleanup in Walker County begins Monday, May 7 and ends Tuesday, May 8. Volunteers should report to Smith Lake Dam parking lot at noon Monday and 8:30 a.m. Tuesday. Volunteers should wear comfortable clothes and closed-toe shoes. Minors must have a chaperone to participate. Lunch will be provided each day.

This Renew Our Rivers cleanup is coordinated by Alabama Power and Smith Lake Civic Association. Duskin Point Marina is a sponsor. 

Overview: Volunteers for Renew Our Rivers, one of the Southeast’s largest river cleanup campaigns, have collected more than 15 million pounds of trash and debris since the program’s inception in 2000. This year, 30 cleanups are planned through November on the Alabama, Black Warrior, Cahaba, Chattahoochee, Coosa, Mobile and Tallapoosa rivers.

Directions: From Birmingham, travel about 30 miles north on Interstate 65. Take exit 291 and turn left onto Highway 91. Continue for 14.6 miles and then turn left onto Highway 69 South. Follow Highway 69 for 4.4 miles and then turn right onto Smith Lake Dam Road/County Highway 43. Go 2.7 miles and the parking lot will be on the right side of the road.
