Volunteers set to clean Bankhead Lake May 19

What: The annual Renew Our Rivers Bankhead Lake cleanup is Saturday, May 19. Volunteers should wear comfortable clothes and closed-toe shoes and report at 8 a.m. to base operations located at River Bend Sports Bar & Grill at Hurd Shoals Road off Camp Oliver Road. Minors must have a chaperone. T-shirts will be provided. The cleanup will conclude at noon followed by lunch for the volunteers.

This Renew Our Rivers cleanup is coordinated by Alabama Power, City Sales of Hueytown, Aardwolf Termite & Pest Control, McKinney Tax Service, Inc., Slater’s Wholesale Cars, Sportsters Bar and Grill, J & J Grocery and Deli, Hueytown Hardware, Bessemer Fasteners & Supply, Pleasant Grove Chevron, Metro Truck Rental, Oak Grove Construction, Crestline Shell, Prestige Diesel, LLC, Bug-Tek Pest Control, Simmons Sporting Goods, Maxx Motor Company, Inc., Cool Temp Heating & Air, Santek, Alabama Marine Police, Barry’s Wholesale Transmission, Premiere Chevrolet, AAA Solutions, Warrior River Fire & Rescue, Hide-A-Way Harbor Boat Sales, Kimbrel’s Grocery, SpeedTech, Army Corps of Engineers, Jefferson County Commission, Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, River Bend Sports Bar and Quinn’s Marina.

Overview: Volunteers for Renew Our Rivers, one of the Southeast’s largest river cleanup campaigns, have collected more than 15 million pounds of trash and debris since the program’s inception in 2000. This year, 30 cleanups are planned through November on the Alabama, Black Warrior, Cahaba, Chattahoochee, Coosa, Mobile and Tallapoosa rivers.

Directions: From Adger: Head southwest on County Road 23 toward Keef Drive. Turn left onto Lock 17 Road and continue for 2.6 miles. Turn right onto Stringfellow Hill Road then turn left onto Camp Oliver Road and follow for 6.3 miles. Turn left onto Hurd Shoals Road and the River Bend Sports Bar & Grill parking lot will be on the left at 108 Hurd Shoals Road.
