Renew Our Rivers volunteers to clean Smith Lake

What: The annual Renew Our Rivers Smith Lake cleanup in Walker County begins Monday, May 6 and ends Tuesday, May 7. Volunteers should report to Smith Lake Dam parking lot by 8:30 a.m. each day. Volunteers should wear comfortable clothes and closed-toe shoes. Minors must have a chaperone to participate. Lunch will be provided.

This Renew Our Rivers cleanup is coordinated by Alabama Power and Smith Lake Civic Association. Duskin Point Marina is a sponsor.

Overview: Volunteers for Renew Our Rivers, one of the Southeast’s largest river cleanup campaigns, have collected more than 15.5 million pounds of trash and debris since the program’s inception in 2000. To celebrate the 20th year, 30 cleanups are planned through November on the Alabama, Black Warrior, Cahaba, Chattahoochee, Coosa, Mobile and Tallapoosa rivers.

Directions: From Jasper, travel north on Alabama 195 to Manchester. Turn right onto Fall City Road, which ends at Camp Recreation Area. The parking lot and boat ramp are to the left.
