Doug Jones named executive vice president of Southern Company Generation and Energy Marketing

Doug Jones has been named executive vice president of Southern Company Generation and Energy Marketing, a business unit of Southern Company that works to manage and generate electricity for the company’s retail customers and markets energy in the competitive wholesale supply business. Jones has also been named senior vice president of Southern Power, the Southern Company subsidiary that builds, owns and manages the company’s competitive generation assets. In his new role, Jones has responsibility for Southern Company’s energy trading and wholesale marketing, as well as the fuel services and generation planning and development departments.

Jones replaces Anthony Topazi, who was recently named president and chief executive officer of Mississippi Power, another Southern Company subsidiary. Jones most recently served as senior vice president of Southern Company Generation and Energy Marketing.

He has a wealth of experience in all aspects of Southern Company’s generation business, including wholesale marketing and strategic planning for our retail markets. With his leadership skills, Doug is also adept in facilitating teamwork among our operating companies to achieve team goals for our fleet of generating units across the Southeast,” said Paul Bowers, president of Southern Company Generation and Energy Marketing.

Jones has more than 20 years of experience with Southern Company and its affiliates. He began his career in 1980 with Southern Company subsidiary Georgia Power, where he held various positions in retail marketing and regulatory affairs. In 1996, he joined Southern Company Generation and Energy Marketing, where he was named vice president in 1998 and senior vice president in 2001.

A native of Hopewell, Va., Jones holds a Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University and a Masters of Business Administration with a concentration in finance from Kennesaw State University.
