Southern Company Y2K Update, 1:50 A.M. EST: Southern Company facilities in Central Time Zone make Y2K transition

About 45 minutes ago, Southern Company’s facilities in the Central Time Zone rolled through midnight. Southern Company identified no problems with its systems that are critical to keeping the lights on for its customers there.

These facilities include the operating subsidiaries Alabama Power, Gulf Power and Mississippi Power; Southern Nuclear headquarters; and Southern Energy’s Mobile Energy Services, State Line and Southern Energy Texas facilities.

Earlier, Southern Company facilities on the U.S. East Coast, in the Bahamas, Trinidad and Tobago, Argentina, Chile, Brazil, Europe and Asia rolled through midnight. Southern Company identified no problems with its systems that are critical to keeping the lights on for its customers there, and no subsequent problems have been identified.

Also Friday, some news reports erroneously stated that a unit at Southern Nuclear’s Vogtle plant in Georgia was shut down unexpectedly due to human error or Year 2000 concerns. The unit in fact went off line Monday, Dec. 27, for a planned outage to repair leaking tubes in the feedwater heater. The unit has been repaired and returned to operation this morning.
