Whelan, Hines named to power marketing positions

Southern Electric International has named Steven A. Whelan as director of power marketing in its Western Region and Anne M. Hines as director of power marketing of its Domestic Business Group, Southern Electric President Tom Boren announced today. They join John J. Robinson, director of the Eastern Region, as Southern Electric’s domestic wholesale management team under the direction of Vice President S. Marce Fuller.

Southern Electric International, a unit of The Southern Company, develops, builds, owns, and operates power production facilities and provides a broad range of technical services to utilities and industrial companies in the U.S. and international markets.

The Southern Company (NYSE: SO) is also the parent firm of five electric utilities: Alabama Power, Georgia Power, Gulf Power, Mississippi Power, and Savannah Electric. Other subsidiaries include Southern Nuclear, Southern Company Services, and Southern Development and Investment Group.

Whelan and Hines’ new responsibilities will include providing management of business development, trading, supply and transportation activities for Southern Energy Marketing Inc., a new subsidiary that markets electricity outside The Southern Company’s traditional service area. Southern Energy’s activities will be administered by employees of Southern Electric.

Whelan, 37, also is responsible for the supervision of Southern Electric’s business development efforts in the western United States. He is based at the company’s office in San Francisco.

Whelan joined The Southern Company in February 1995 after serving as director of finance for Jefferson Gas Systems Inc. in San Francisco. He also has worked as an executive in the energy business for Kenetech Energy Systems in San Francisco and Altamont Energy Corp. in San Francisco. He holds a master’s degree in business administration and a bachelor’s degree in biology from San Francisco State University.

Hines, 34, is responsible for establishing national trading and supply activities for Southern Energy. She joined The Southern Company in 1983 as a senior engineer at Georgia Power. She also has worked as an energy information administrator for Georgia Power and as a supervisor of energy accounting and as a manager of support system planning for Southern Company Services. She holds a master’s degree in business administration and a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from Auburn University.

Southern Energy buys and sells electricity to and from utilities outside the Southern Company system – the nation’s largest producer of electric power – as well as independent power producers and other buyers and sellers of wholesale electricity.

“Southern Energy is The Southern Company’s vehicle for taking greater advantage of our expertise in the new and highly competitive arena of power marketing,” Boren said. “Steve Whelan and Anne Hines’ extensive range of skills and experience will bring added depth to Southern Energy’s management team.”

In addition to its office in San Francisco and its headquarters in Atlanta, Southern Energy has an office in Vancouver, Wash., to serve the Pacific Northwest. Additional offices will be established in other key market regions, Boren said.
