Southern Company Y2K Update, 1 A.M. EST: Southern Company facilities on U.S. East Coast make Y2K transition

About one hour ago, Southern Company’s facilities on the U.S. East Coast and the Bahamas rolled through midnight. Southern Company identified no problems with its systems that are critical to keeping the lights on for its customers there.

These facilities include Georgia Power, Southern Company’s largest operating subsidiary, and Savannah Electric; Southern Company headquarters; Southern Energy’s power plants in Virginia, Massachusetts and New York; and Southern Company Energy Marketing. Also making the Year 2000 transition in this time zone was Freeport Power in the Bahamas.

Earlier Friday, Southern Company facilities in Trinidad and Tobago, Argentina, Chile, Brazil, Europe and Asia rolled through midnight. Southern Company identified no problems with its systems that are critical to keeping the lights on for its customers there, and no subsequent problems have been identified.

Also Friday, some news reports erroneously stated that a unit at Southern Nuclear’s Vogtle plant in Georgia was shut down unexpectedly due to human error or Year 2000 concerns. The unit in fact went off line Monday, Dec. 27, for a planned outage to repair leaking tubes in the feedwater heater. The unit has been repaired and returned to operation this morning.
