Southern Company’s Anthony James named Black Engineer of the Year

ATLANTA – Anthony James, President and CEO of Savannah Electric, a subsidiary of Southern Company, was named Black Engineer of the Year 2004 by Career Communications, a media services company that recognizes significant minority achievement in engineering, science and technology. The award candidates are judged on their professional achievement, career achievement and technical contribution.

James was officially presented the award during the 18th Annual Black Engineer Awards Conference which took place February 19-21, 2004, in Baltimore, MD.

“The awards conference gives young people the opportunity to witness the achievements of real-life, relevant minority role models,” said Tyrone D. Taborn, chairman and CEO of Baltimore-based Career Communications Group, Inc. “The conference also serves as a conscience to remind everyone that minority talent management is critical.”

Allen Franklin, Southern Company’s CEO, was present at the event to introduce James for the award. Upon acceptance of the award, James noted the dynamics of mentoring to inspire young people to achieve their dreams. Also, James recognized people who were a source of inspiration to him along the way, encouraging him to do his best and never give up.

"I am honored to receive this award,” said James. “I never imagined this level of recognition, but it is proof that if we persevere and work hard, great things can happen."

James became president and CEO of Savannah Electric in 2001. Since joining Southern Company in 1978, James has developed broad experience in the areas of engineering, construction, power plant management, safety and health, corporate office, employee benefits and wholesale power marketing. He graduated from the University of South Florida with a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering.
