Southern Company`s Web site to broadcast management remarks on second quarter performance

ATLANTA – Southern Company, the largest generator of electricity in the United States, today announced a new investor feature on its award-winning Web site. On July 20, the company will post a recording of management comments on the company’s second quarter performance and every quarter thereafter will provide management remarks on the Internet.

“Southern Company continues to try to make it easier for all investors to get information on our company,” said W. Larry Westbrook, the company’s chief financial officer. “We’re using the Internet to more broadly disseminate information about our quarterly performance and issues affecting the business.”

Southern Company’s Web site received the 1998 and 1999 Select Site Award from the Dow Jones Business Directory, whose primary function is to show investors where quality business information – timely, in-depth and accurate – can be found on the Web. Southern Company’s investor site includes everything from a “power lunch” with the CEO discussing the company’s new trading office in Amsterdam to key reports and filings that help investors make informed decisions.

Information about the company’s direct stock purchase program, the Southern Investment Plan (SIP), also can be found on the Web site along with the quarterly shareholder reports and the annual report. Beginning next week with the release of its second quarter results, the company also will post a package of detailed financial information that provides further information for investors.

Southern Company currently has nearly 700 million shares outstanding. Institutional investors hold about 39 percent of Southern Company’s shares. Retail investors hold another 50 percent, and employees and directors hold 11 percent.
