Southern Company Y2K Update, 10:50 P.M. EST: Southern Company facilities in Argentina, Chile make Y2K transition

About one hour ago, when its facilities in Argentina and Chile rolled through midnight, Southern Company identified no problems with its systems that are critical to keeping the lights on for its customers in those countries.

Earlier today, Southern Company facilities in Brazil, in Europe and in Asia rolled through midnight. Southern Company identified no problems with its systems that are critical to keeping the lights on for its customers there, and no subsequent problems have been identified.

Small numbers of typical outages have been reported in Georgia and Alabama tonight because of circumstances unrelated to the Year 2000 transition.

Also tonight, some news reports erroneously stated that a unit at Southern Nuclear’s Vogtle plant in Georgia was shut down unexpectedly due to human error or Year 2000 concerns. The unit in fact went off line Monday, Dec. 27, for a planned outage to repair leaking tubes in the feedwater heater. The unit has been repaired and returned to operation this morning.
