Volunteers to clean Lake Mitchell March 21 in Renew Our Rivers campaign

What:  The 12th Lake Mitchell spring cleanup is Saturday, March 21 from 8 a.m. to noon. Volunteers with or without boats will meet at Higgins Ferry Park in Chilton County. The cleanup will end with a picnic lunch.

This Renew Our Rivers cleanup is coordinated by the Lake Mitchell Homeowners and Boat Owners Association. Last year, about 70 volunteers collected more than two tons of trash.

Overview:   Volunteers for Renew Our Rivers, the Southeast’s largest river cleanup,
have collected nearly 10 million pounds of trash and debris from Alabama and Southeast rivers since its inception in 2000. Twenty-three cleanups are planned through October.

Cleanups are held each year on the Cahaba, Coosa, Tallapoosa, Black Warrior and Mobile rivers in Alabama.

Directions: From Birmingham, take Interstate 65 to exit 208. Take County Road 28 (Lake Mitchell Road) until it ends at Higgins Ferry Park.
