Volunteers roll up their sleeves for Mobile River cleanup, part of Renew Our Rivers campaign, May 6-9

What:  The annual Mobile River cleanup will begin Wednesday and will run through Saturday, May 9. Volunteers with boats should meet Wednesday through Friday at the front gate of Alabama Power’s Plant Barry at 7:15 a.m. to help remove trash, tires and discarded items from the river. On Saturday, volunteers will meet at the Barry Guesthouse across from Alabama Power’s Plant Barry at 8 a.m. to clean Salco Road and Ellicott Stone Historical Park.  Cleanups will end at noon.

This Renew Our Rivers cleanup is coordinated by Alabama Power employees.  More than 8,020 pounds of trash were removed from the Mobile River and surrounding areas in 2008.

Overview:  Volunteers for Renew Our Rivers, the Southeast’s largest river 
cleanup campaign, have collected more than 10 million pounds of trash and debris from Alabama and Southeast rivers since its 2000 inception. There are 23 cleanups planned through Oct. 24 on the Cahaba, Coosa, Tallapoosa, Black Warrior and Mobile rivers.

 From Mobile – take Interstate 65 North for approximately 10 miles. Merge onto Highway 43 North for approximately 10 miles.  Plant Barry is located at 15300 Highway 43 North.
