Volunteers clean Village Creek Sept. 16-19 as part of Renew Our Rivers campaign

What:  The fourth annual Village Creek cleanup is Sept. 16-19. Volunteers are needed for the out-of-creek cleanup Saturday, Sept. 19 from 9-11:30 a.m.  Volunteers will meet at Avenue M in Ensley.  Lunch will be served at noon.

Village Creek Society is coordinating this Renew Our Rivers cleanup in partnership with the Birmingham Fire and Rescue Department, Birmingham Public Works Department, Vulcan Materials and Alabama Power. In 2008, almost 300 volunteers removed nearly seven tons of trash and debris. Since 2006, volunteers have removed more than 35 tons of trash from the creek.

Overview:  Volunteers for Renew Our Rivers, the Southeast’s largest river cleanup campaign, have collected more than 10 million pounds of trash and debris from Alabama and Southeastern rivers since the program’s 2000 inception. There are 25 cleanups planned through Oct. 24 on the Cahaba, Coosa, Tallapoosa, Black Warrior and Mobile rivers.

Directions:  Take Interstate 20/59 West to Exit 121 (Bush Boulevard/Ensley). Turn right off the interstate to Avenue V, which becomes Avenue W. Travel approximately 1/2 mile north to the creek.
