Volunteers to clean Village Creek Oct. 10 as part of Renew Our Rivers campaign

What:              The fourth annual Village Creek cleanup has been rescheduled for Saturday, Oct. 10 from 9 to 11 a.m.  Volunteers will meet at Avenue M at Moro Park in Ensley.  Lunch will be served at 11:30 a.m.

Overview:      The Village Creek Society is coordinating this Renew Our Rivers cleanup in partnership with the Birmingham Fire and Rescue Department, Birmingham Public Works Department, Vulcan Materials and Alabama Power. In 2008, almost 300 volunteers removed nearly 7 tons of trash and debris. Since 2006, volunteers have removed more than 35 tons of trash from the creek.

Volunteers for Renew Our Rivers, the Southeast’s largest river cleanup campaign, have collected more than 10 million pounds of trash and debris from Alabama and Southeastern rivers since the program’s 2000 inception. There are 25 cleanups planned through Oct. 24 on the Cahaba, Coosa, Tallapoosa, Black Warrior and Mobile rivers.
