Volunteers clean Lake Mitchell Oct. 24 as part of Renew Our Rivers campaign

What:              The 13th Lake Mitchell fall cleanup is Saturday, Oct. 24 from 8 a.m. to noon. Volunteers with or without boats will meet at Higgins Ferry Park in Chilton County. The cleanup will end with a hotdog lunch around noon.

This Renew Our Rivers cleanup is coordinated by the Lake Mitchell Homeowners and Boat Owners Association. Last year, about 100 volunteers collected more than a ton of trash.

Overview:      Volunteers for Renew Our Rivers, the Southeast’s largest river cleanup campaign, have collected more than 10 million pounds of trash and debris from Alabama and Southeastern rivers since the program’s 2000 inception. There have been 25 cleanups on the Cahaba, Coosa, Tallapoosa, Black Warrior and Mobile rivers in 2009, with the last set for Oct. 24.

Directions:     From Birmingham, take Interstate 65 to exit 208. Take County Road 28 (Lake Mitchell Road) until it ends at Higgins Ferry Park.
