Volunteers roll up their sleeves for cleanup on Weiss Lake, part of Renew Our Rivers campaign

What:              The 11th annual Weiss Lake Renew Our Rivers cleanup will run throughout the month of April.  Media opportunities include:

                       

                        Thursday, April 8:  Sand Rock High School students will be participating in a cleanup at Yellow Creek Marina from 8:15 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. Students will also be participating from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and 1:25 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.  at Leesburg Landing.

 

                        Friday, April 23:  Centre Elementary students will be participating in a cleanup at Centre City Park from noon to 2 p.m.

 

These Renew Our Rivers cleanups are being coordinated by the Weiss Lake Improvement Association. In 2009, more than 1,700 volunteers, teachers and students removed nearly 10 tons of trash and debris from Weiss Lake.

 

Overview:      Volunteers for Renew Our Rivers, one of the Southeast’s largest river

cleanups, have collected more than 10 million pounds of trash and debris from Alabama and Southeast rivers since its inception in 2000. Twenty-five cleanups are planned through October. Cleanups are held each year on the Cahaba, Coosa, Tallapoosa, Black Warrior, Mobile and Alabama rivers.

 

Directions:     Yellow Creek Marina: From Birmingham – follow Interstate 59 north to Gadsden.  Take exit 182 to merge onto I-759 toward Gadsden.  Take exit

4B and follow US 411 North.  Turn left onto Industrial Boulevard. Turn right onto AL-273 North/Blue Pond Road.

 

                        Leesburg Landing: From Birmingham – follow Interstate 59 north to Gadsden.  Take exit 182 to merge onto I-759 toward Gadsden.  Take exit 4B and follow US 411 North.  Turn right onto Riverside Drive. Turn left onto Lakeshore Drive past the Leesburg Post Office.  Travel approximately three-fourths of a mile to Leesburg Landing.

 

                        Centre City Park: From Birmingham – follow Interstate 59 north to Gadsden.  Take exit 182 to merge onto I-759 toward Gadsden.  Take exit 4B and follow US 411 North.  Turn left at Chestnut Bypass.  Turn right onto Armory Road.  Take first right onto Park Street.
