Conservation work ready for prime time

Attention channel surfers: Tune into the Pursuit Channel’s Get in the Game program the week of July 26 for a segment featuring Southern Company’s work to preserve the longleaf pine.

The weekly outdoors show will focus on the National Wild Turkey Federation’s “Wildlife Management and Longleaf Restoration Landowner Field Day,” which was held in south Alabama’s Conecuh County on Earth Day in April. The event celebrated the culmination of a three-year, $1.3 million Longleaf Legacy grant from Southern Company and the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation to restore nearly 10,900 acres of longleaf pine on public and private lands.

About 300 people attended the event at the 1,700-acre property belonging to Salem and Dianne Saloom. The day combined fun and educational activities to emphasize the importance of growing longleaf pines. Among the speakers was Southern Company transmission vice president Bob Schaffeld, who is included in the half-hour program.

Southern Company and the NWTF have a longstanding partnership in environmental stewardship programs, including Longleaf Legacy.

The program is scheduled to air three times – at 9:30 p.m. EDT Wednesday, July 28; at 8:30 a.m. EDT Thursday, July 29; and at 2 a.m. EDT Sunday, Aug. 1.

Get in the Game features NWTF biologists and staff showing viewers the best ways to bring wildlife to their property. Along with biologists and industry specialists, NWTF experts provide habitat management and hunting tips.
