What:  Alabama Power will release approximately 1,800 rainbow trout below Smith Dam on Wednesday, Nov. 24 at 8 a.m.

Overview: The trout release is among the improvements connected to Alabama Power’s new license with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission to operate Smith Dam. The license was issued in March 2010.

The trout release is one of several steps under way to enhance the trout fishery below Smith Dam. Other improvements include adding public access sites on the Black Warrior River below Smith Dam, the placement of fish habitat enhancement structures, and a plan to increase the level of dissolved oxygen in turbine releases to enhance water quality.

Directions from Birmingham: Take Highway 78 west to Interstate 22 west (Corridor X). Take exit 65 toward Jasper. Turn right at Industrial Parkway. Continue straight on Alabama 69 north. Turn left at County Road 43/Smith Lake Dam Road. Turn right at Power House Road.
