Alabama Power hosts education event at Honda Indy Grand Prix of Alabama
High school students to learn from experts about “Automobiles for a Cleaner Tomorrow” during April 7 event BIRMINGHAM – Dozens of 10th and 11th graders from Birmingham city schools will converge at Barber Motorsports Park for the first-ever, Alabama Power: Automobiles for a Cleaner Tomorrow education event at the Honda Indy Grand Prix of Alabama. The event on April 7 brings together students from Birmingham schools who are interested in math and science with experts from Alabama Power’s Electric Transportation group, from the IZOD IndyCar Series and from Honda Motor Manufacturing of Alabama. The experts will expose the students to some of the latest in automotive technology, including close-up looks at a high-performance Indy car, an emission-free, all-electric sports car and the latest energy-efficient automobiles from Honda, as well as information about Honda’s research and development work related to fuel cell cars. Students will also learn about Alabama’s growing prominence in the world of automobile manufacturing and related businesses. The Alabama Power education event is among the kickoff activities at the Honda Indy Grand Prix of Alabama, taking place April 8-10 at Barber Motorsports Park. “The Honda Indy Grand Prix of Alabama offers a great opportunity to show students how studying math and science can lead to rewarding careers in the auto industry, as well as in other technical fields,” said Bobbie Knight, vice president of Alabama Power’s Birmingham Division. “At Alabama Power, we also want students to study math and science, so they’re prepared to fill the skilled and technical positions we will need in the coming years.” The event will also focus on the growing interest and industry related to “greener” vehicles that produce fewer emissions and reduce the nation’s dependence on foreign oil. Alabama Power has been a leader in promoting greener electric transportation and is working to educate customers about the expanding options related to plug-in electric vehicles. Alabama Power: Automobiles for a Cleaner Tomorrow will begin at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, April 7 in the hospitality tent across from the Fan Zone at Barber Motorsports Park. To get to Barber Motorsports Park, take Interstate 20 west from downtown Birmingham. Get off at exit 140 (Leeds). At the bottom of the ramp, make a right onto U.S. 78 East. Make a right at the Chevron Station onto Rex Lake Road. The park entrance is on your right, past Bass Pro Shops. Once inside the park, bear left at the Barber Vintage Motorsports Museum. Look for the hospitality tent on the left, past the museum and across the street from the Fan Zone. Credentialed media should arrive no later than 10:15 a.m. to set up.
