Longtime broadcast journalist Ted Koppel will be in Birmingham on Thursday, Sept. 12.

What:

Longtime broadcast journalist Ted Koppel will be in Birmingham on Thursday, Sept. 12 during the city’s weeklong commemoration of the civil rights events of 1963. Koppel will conduct an on-stage interview with Birmingham community journalist and entrepreneur Dr. Jesse J. Lewis Sr. The invitation-only event honors the life and times of Lewis and celebrates the 50th anniversary of The Birmingham Times, which he founded.

When:

Thursday, Sept. 12, 6 p.m. Media availability with Lewis at 5:45 p.m.

Where:

Alabama Power Corporate Headquarters auditorium, 600 18th Street North, downtown Birmingham.

Additional Information:

Koppel, who started his career at ABC News in 1963, will talk with Lewis about the role of the journalist and the founding of The Birmingham Times as a newspaper that covered the African-American community far beyond the civil rights movement. Koppel’s visit is part of Alabama Power’s “Power of Leadership” initiative, which celebrates pioneers of business in the black community as Birmingham marks 50 years since the 1963 civil rights struggle.
