Scammers Spoofing Caller ID

Alabama Power is one of many utilities warning customers about the dangers of a spreading phone scam. While the thieves have long been posing as Alabama Power representatives over the phone, they are now programming their outbound lines to say “Alabama Power,” tricking customers into thinking the call is legitimate.

In the scam, the thieves will call and warn customers that they have just a matter of hours to settle up their bill, or their power will be turned off. Customers are told to go to a convenience store and load up a “money pack,” which is a disposable debit card that is virtually untraceable. Once the victim calls back with the information, the money is gone within minutes.

Alabama Power does not conduct business this way, and urges customers to act on their suspicions. If someone calls you claiming to be with Alabama Power, politely hang up and call our toll-free customer service line at 800-245-2244, where you can be assured you are talking with the right people.

  • We do not contact customers and ask for payment via a bank card.
  • We do not go door-to-door demanding payment nor will we ask you for your bank information or credit card information.

Alabama Power is working with law enforcement to investigate the recent scams. If you were contacted or if you have additional information about this scam, you should contact your local law enforcement agency.
