Former Democratic Hill assistant joins Southern Company's DC office

WASHINGTON, D.C. - April 7, 2008 - Southern Company today announced that Stoney Burke has joined the company as director of federal legislative affairs in the Washington, D.C. office. In this role, Burke will support Southern Company's federal outreach efforts.

Burke previously served as a legislative assistant to U.S. Rep. Chet Edwards (D-TX), where he advised the Chairman of the Military Construction and Veterans Affairs Appropriations Subcommittee on the issues of energy, agriculture, trade and natural resources.

"Apart from his knowledge of energy policy and potential regulatory and legislative issues involving the electric power industry, Stoney brings a wide range of experience to this role," said John Pemberton, vice president, government affairs, Southern Company. Burke's experience also includes a three-year stint as an associate with a boutique lobbying firm focused on municipal and university clients. He holds a bachelor's degree from Texas A&M University, where he also served as a research assistant in the Office of International Agriculture.
