Alabama Power Celebrates Completion of Generating Unit at Plant Barry

  What:     Alabama Power and Southern Company Generation announce a
            community and employee celebration to mark the completion of a
            new generating unit at Plant Barry.  Plant tours will be
            offered, and lunch will be served.

  When:     Wednesday, July 19, 2000 at 11:00 a.m.

  Where:    Plant Barry, Bucks, Alabama.  From I-65, take exit 19.  Go north
            on U.S. 43 to the 19-mile marker.  The plant entrance is on the
            right.


  Background:  Unit 6 at Plant Barry uses the most efficient,
  environmentally advanced technology available today -- combined-cycle
  generation.  The new unit will produce an additional 540 megawatts of
  power to meet Alabama's growing energy demand.  Southern Company
  Generation is a business unit of Southern Company , the parent
  company of Alabama Power.
      Southern Company Generation currently operates 22 plants in Alabama,
  and 66 across the southeast, for a combined capacity of approximately
  35,000 megawatts, making it one of the largest producers of electricity in
  the United States.
