Volunteers roll up their sleeves for cleanup on the Mobile River, part of Renew Our Rivers campaign, April 21-24

What:  The annual Mobile River cleanup began Monday and will run through April 24. Volunteers with boats will meet at the boat launch at Alabama Power’s Plant Barry at 8 a.m. to remove trash, tires and discarded items from the river. The cleanups will be from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Wednesday and 8 a.m. to noon on Thursday.

This Renew Our Rivers cleanup is coordinated by Alabama Power employees.  More than 4,000 pounds of trash was removed from the Mobile River in 2007.

Overview:  Renew Our Rivers, the Southeast’s largest river cleanup campaign,
has collected nearly nine million pounds of trash and debris from Alabama and Southeast rivers since its 2000 inception. There are 27 cleanups planned through Oct. 25.

Cleanups are held on the Cahaba, Coosa, Tallapoosa, Black Warrior and Mobile rivers in Alabama.

Directions: Directions to Plant Barry
 From Mobile – Take Interstate 65 North for approximately 10 miles.  Merge onto Highway 43 North for approximately 10 miles.  Plant Barry is located at 15300 Highway 43 North.
